In connection to the 23rd Governing Council of the United Nations Human
Settlement Programme (UN-Habitat) in April 2011, FIG President CheeHai
Teo was delighted at the opportunity to address and interact with
members of the Institution of Surveyors of Kenya (ISK) as well as surveying
undergraduates on the afternoon of Wednesday 13th April 2011 in Nairobi. The
event was facilitated by the Department of Geospatial and Space Technology,
School of Engineering, University of Nairobi and the audience comprised
members of ISK and students from both the geospatial and land economy
programs at the University.
Chairman of ISK, Mr Collins Kowuor together with his Deputy, Mr
John Kihagi, FIG Commission 8 Chair, Mr. Wafula Nabutola as well
as members of the ISK Council, senior members of ISK, and leading
academicians from the University of Nairobi, the Jomo Kenyatta University of
Agriculture and Technology and the Kenya Polytechnic University College
warmly received President Teo. The event kicked off with briefings by ISK on
the route to membership. President Teo, in his address, congratulated ISK
for its groundbreaking work in engaging civil society, bringing the value
and benefits of surveying to better the Kenyan society. ISK has been a key
actor in the lead up to the new Kenyan Constitution with an all important
land chapter that aimed to ensure secure tenure rights for all Kenyan
citizens. The audience was encouraged to build on this good work, to
continue to innovate, to be mindful of the profession’s responsibility in
society, environment and economy so that the profession’s significance and
relevance can be further enhanced within Kenyan.
Later in the evening, Chairman Kowuor and his fellow Council and senior
members hosted President Teo to a dinner where interactions and discussions
continued. ISK was challenged to be more active in FIG, especially in FIG’s
events, in particular to share its experiences, challenges and opportunities
within the new Kenyan Constitution.
